With its internal repression and one-party system, it would be absurd to view China as a democracy. Yet, in the last decades, China has seen enormous technological developments and economic growth. China’s global influence has also increased thanks to huge foreign investments and infrastructure projects, as well as the power of its military. Is the Chinese model sustainable? How can democratic opposition in China be supported?


VOLKER STANZEL [D] is a former Political Director at the Federal Foreign Office and former German Ambassador to China and Japan. Since 2005 he has been working at the German Institute for International and Security Affairs in Berlin.


XIAOLU GUO [China/ GB] is a writer and filmmaker and has lived in London since 2002 to escape Chinese censorship. She is acclaimed for both her literary and film work.

TIENCHI MARTIN-LIAO [China/ D] is an author, translator, and publicist. Since 2009 she has chaired the PEN Centre in Taipei. She is an advocate for human rights in China.
